“The entire space filled with heavenly sound”

On many baroque and renaissance paintings one finds entire angel- orchestras performing from various heavenly galleries in well-organised instrumental- and singing groups.

The tradition of multi-chorus performance, of incorporating the entire space for the benefit of the music, originated in the great cathedrals of Northern Italy in the late 15thand early 16th century.

The quick alternation between different choruses and their interconnected performance lend a narrative and visual excitement to the musical happening that is comparable to the action on opera and theatre stages. Following along the lines of the “theatro musicale”, different dramaturgical tasks are assigned to the separate musical choirs, depending on their make-up and options regarding sound.

Through the ordered interplay of the different sound sources that are positioned within the space, a multidimensional, magnificent painting of music emerges, that affects not only through the various colours of the instruments and voices, but also leads the listener to a truly complete understanding of space, time and music.
